New Excalibar
The repaired furnace was lit, and we observed whether it would withstand the rising temperature. As the burned firewood turned to charcoal and the heat intensified, no abnormalities were found. Yeah, seems like there’s no problem.
"Alright, looks good. Now, let’s add more charcoal and really crank up the heat."
"Fufu, it’s finally happening! I’m itching to get started!"
Whoa, careful. I get you’re excited, but maybe don’t swing that hammer around just yet, Serai-san.
"Now, we’ll toss in the iron like this… Alright, Pixie Queen, we need some wind."
"……"
The aloof Pixie Queen cast a spell to send a steady, controlled stream of wind into the furnace’s air intake. Why so specific? Because that’s exactly how I asked for it.
"Whoa, amazing! The flames just got way stronger!"
"Gotta wear the suit, or this heat’s gonna be unbearable."
Peering into the furnace, all of us were clad in battle suits. But in this gear, there’s no worry about injuries or burns. The suits are tough, and the internal lubricating fluid makes the protection flawless.
As we watched carefully, the iron inside the furnace gradually began to glow red.
"Look, look! The iron’s turning red!"
"Yeah. This is where things get exciting."
"Sure is, can’t wait~"
Once the iron was heated red-hot all the way through, we pulled it out and placed it on the anvil to hammer it.
First, just striking it freely without overthinking. With each swing of the hammer, sparks flew wildly, and the shape changed in a satisfying way. Hmm, this is the power of superhumans at work. Pretty fun.
"Come on, Egetsu-san! Let me try already!"
"Hahaha, alright, let’s switch."
I handed the tongs holding the hot iron and the hammer to Serai-san and swapped places.
"Wow…! It’s amazing, it’s changing shape with every hit!"
"Well, that’s ‘cause it’s us. A normal person couldn’t do this."
Yeah, nowadays forging is done with mechanical hammers, but when we swing, the iron changes just as fast.
Taking turns between the three of us, the ringing gingan sounds gradually shifted to a sharper kin tone. The iron, heated with charcoal and hammered under intense pressure, must have absorbed carbon and turned into steel. If I remember right, steel is defined by a carbon content over 2.0%, while anything below is just iron.
"Hey, check this out—it’s looking pretty good, right?"
"Yeah. You could almost make a knife out of it as-is."
"Then lemme handle the finishin’. Machi’s too rough with it."
"Tch~ Fine, your turn, Shizu."
The test piece ended up vaguely knife-shaped, which the skilled Nina-san then refined with precise strikes.
"…Done! Not bad, eh?"
"Yeah, nice work, Shizu!"
"Congrats! Now, let’s quench it in water."
A knife forged by the three of us working together. Turned out better than expected. At first, we just hammered freely to get a feel for it, but it was seriously fun. Serai-san, still craving more, was already tossing the next piece of iron into the furnace.
Heh, I guess this is what they mean when the means become the end.
…….
After hammering a few more pieces and getting the hang of it, we properly researched blacksmithing before attempting to modify Excalibar.
And—success.
There was a dumb mistake where the long metal lever didn’t fit in the furnace, but we fixed it by heating and swapping the hilt and blade. Then, all three of us went ham on hammering it into shape.
Thus, the New Excalibar was born—a two-handed sword about 120 cm long.
The blade itself is around 100 cm, with a 20 cm hilt. It looks like a straight-up two-hander, but the crowbar’s nail-puller parts were extended to form the crossguard. A design that still hints at its crowbar origins.
"Damn fine work~"
"Fufu, satisfied, Shizu?"
"More’n satisfied~"
"Glad to hear it."
Yeah, Nina-san seems pleased with the result too. A total success.
"Shame the other stuff didn’t turn out as well as this and the knife, though."
"That’s ‘cause Machi got carried away and hammered too hard. Crushed everythin’ else…"
"Tehe, my bad~"
"So, Nina-san, we’ll wrap the hilt in leather, but what about the blade?"
"Hmm… Let’s try usin’ it as-is first. If it feels lackin’, we can sharpen it later."
"Then, can I have the knife?"
"Nope. This time, Ruu was left out, so we gotta bring her back a heartfelt souvenir. Just givin’ her store-bought sweets would be sad, right?"
"Ah… yeah, you’re right. Then the knife’s for Ruu."
"Deal. Let’s polish it up nice as a gift. If we say all three of us put our hearts into it, she’ll love it."
The furnace broke again from overuse, but the results were more than satisfying.
Oh, and after some discussion, the New Excalibar also got the name Hyper Excalibar. Plus, that faint glow is still there, so it probably kept a +1 or +2 attack bonus.
Well then—acquired: Hyper Excalibar +1 or 2. That about sums it up.
What do you think?
