The Mighty Machi
From the garden, beyond the shed, stood an old-fashioned earthen storehouse.
Inside were stored rice, large barrels of miso and pickles, serving as a pantry. And further beyond, hidden away, was a small charcoal kiln. Seriously, Serai-san’s yard is huge.
"Hey, Shizu. If we were to modify Excalibar, how would you want it?"
"Hmm... Durability is the top priority, but maybe a bit longer would be nice?"
"What do you think, Egetsu-san?"
"Got it. Then I’ll do my best to meet your expectations."
As we prepared the charcoal kiln, the conversation grew lively about how to modify Excalibar.
In the end, to meet Nina-san’s request for something durable and longer, we decided to fuse the two Excalibars into one. As an extra precaution, we also used a throwing gold lever—previously stored in the spatial vault but never once seeing the light of day—as the core.Basically, we wrapped both sides of the gold lever core with each Excalibar.
I’m pretty sure there’s a Japanese sword-making technique like this. As for the shape, we settled on a safe two-handed sword design.
That said, it’s unclear what’ll happen to the enhancement enchantments on Excalibar after this modification. But Nina-san would rather have it properly reforged, even if the enchantments disappear, than keep using it in a dangerously unstable state.
"Alright, the charcoal kiln’s ready, so let’s light it up first."
"Then I’ll leave the rest to you. Egetsu-san, can you handle the broken furnace?"
"Got it. Next up, let’s fix the furnace."
The charcoal kiln showed signs of recent repairs, but the forge furnace was half-destroyed. The stacked bricks had partially collapsed—no way we could use it as-is.
"Alright, I’ve got the stones and clay ready as requested, so we’re good to go anytime."
"Thanks. Let’s get started on the repairs right away."
We worked next to the charcoal kiln, now puffing out smoke. But with our [Slime] skill, repairs were a breeze.
Just mix clay with highly adhesive slime, and voilà—super-strong cement. We used it to patch up the furnace, sticking stones in place without worrying about drips or collapses like regular cement.
"Haaah… Seriously, [Slime] is so handy. You can use it for anything if you’re creative. Took less than two minutes to fix!"
"Hahaha, convenient, right? Skills really are all about how you use ’em. Alright, let’s channel some mana to dry it out and light it up."
Normally, you’d let fresh cement dry over time.
If it’s still wet, heat can cause cracks from steam expansion. But with mana-made slime, no worries. A little extra mana manipulation to evaporate the moisture, and we skipped the drying time entirely.
"Amazing! I thought it’d take way longer, but it’s done in a flash!"
As she said that, Serai-san was sticking little castle-like towers onto the furnace with leftover cement.
"How’s this? Cute, right?"
"Yeah, super cute."
"Ehehe."
Functionally, though, it’s completely pointless.
But I won’t say that. She’d definitely get upset. Yeah, for girls, "cute" must be as crucial as horns are for otaku. I mean, if horns determine whether a mech is a commander unit or a grunt, that’s a huge difference.
"Then, should we give it a try now?"
"Nah, let’s light it up first and see how it holds. I’m pretty sure it’s fine, but we’re amateurs—might break again."
"True. Better safe than sorry."
"Plus, we should practice a bit before fixing Excalibar, right?"
"Oh! Then I’ll grab some scrap iron from the shed! Let’s practice with that!"
"Yeah, thanks, Serai-san. If anything’s too heavy—...never mind, you’ll be fine."
"Fufu, that’s right. Leave it to the mighty Machi-chan! Be right back. Kyah!"
As she dashed off, Serai-san spun around and slammed straight into the storehouse, rubbing her forehead in pain. Even Nina-san looked exasperated.
"See? That’s what happens when you don’t look where you’re going~"
"Ow-oww… Ugh, now there’s a forehead mark on the storehouse…"
Ah, well… At that speed, a normal person would’ve been knocked flat. But she just goes "tehepero" and walks it off—Serai-san’s gotten crazy durable.
At this rate, she might even awaken superhuman strength or something.
What do you think?
