Seeing her not speaking, Lu Youting’s eyes suddenly turned ice-cold, “Why aren’t you saying anything?

Jian Si, are you hiding something from me?”

Jian Si forced herself to calm down and curved her lips into a smile, “Who am I to you?

Even married couples have their privacy, don’t they?

Why can’t I keep things from you?”

Her words were undoubtedly an admission.

Lu Youting’s face turned as ugly as if it had been smeared with ink, “Don’t obfuscate the matter; you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Jian Si pretended to be dumb, “How would I know what you’re talking about if I’m not the worm in your stomach?”

Lu Youting suddenly gripped her wrist, “What’s on your phone?

Jian Si, don’t try to fool me!

I’m not stupid.”

“Ouch…

it hurts…” Jian Si’s wrist ached from his grip, and she inhaled sharply, “Let go of me quickly, stop manhandling me.

If you really want to know that badly, then I’ll let you see; it’s not a big deal anyway.”

Upon hearing this, Lu Youting slowly released his hand.

Having gained her freedom, Jian Si took out her smartphone and generously handed it over for Lu Youting to see.

Sure enough, the screen only displayed a photograph of Lu Yanbai sleeping.

The little guy was tilting his head with a slight smile, sleeping very sweetly.

Jian Si explained, “Seeing Xiao Bai sleeping so soundly, I couldn’t help but take a few more photos.

What’s the matter?

Can’t I sneak a peek?”

Lu Youting obviously wasn’t so easily deceived, “Then who were you talking to?”

Jian Si replied with resignation, “I gave birth to such an adorable and handsome son, can’t I just marvel at that to myself?”

Lu Youting looked at her with half-belief and half-doubt.

He always felt that there was more to it.

But he couldn’t quite put his finger on what was amiss.

Jian Si watched the changes in his expression without a hint of reaction.

Seeing that he was not further suspicious, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Thankfully, her phone had a privacy screen protector.

Lu Youting must have only seen a rough image, not the details, otherwise, he wouldn’t have been so easily hoodwinked by her.

Fearing that staying longer might give him a chance to see through her, Jian Si prepared to escape, “Director Lu, do you have anything else you need?

If not, I’m going back to my room!”

Lu Youting furrowed his brows, “Must we be so estranged between us?”

“Otherwise?” Jian Si raised an eyebrow, asking with a half-smile, half-mockery, “Should I not call you Director Lu and instead call you Youting like Ye Qingqing does, or maybe Youting?

Please, I’ll have nightmares.”

Lu Youting’s molars ground together with a gnashing sound.

For a moment, he despised the sharp-tongued woman before him.

“Lu Youting, after a couple divorces, it’s impossible to just become friends!” Jian Si said, approaching him and enunciating each word, “Especially between you and me, we will never reconcile in this lifetime.

I will never forgive you for what you did to me in the past.

You can pretend nothing happened, but I can’t.”

After speaking, she let out a cold laugh and left indifferently.

Lu Youting, not understanding the origin of her hatred towards him, was infuriated to no end, taking deep breaths repeatedly to soothe the rage in his heart.

Though they were divorced, he had given her a substantial compensation.

Why did she hate him so much, as if he were the killer of her father?

No sooner had Jian Si entered her room than her phone in her pocket rang.

The incoming call displayed a string of unfamiliar numbers, but those numbers were etched deep in her memory, unforgettable even in death.

She silently watched the numbers bounce on the screen, neither hanging up nor answering.

Suddenly, Lu Youting’s voice echoed from behind her, “Is it a call from Jian Uncle?

Why aren’t you answering?”

Jian Si snorted with self-derision, “Five years and not a single call, and now, the moment Ye Qingqing is wronged, here comes the phone call!

What do you think he wants from me?”

Lu Youting replied discontentedly, “There’s no father who doesn’t love his child; don’t paint him in such a bad light.”

“Think?” Jian Si coldly twisted her mouth into a sneer, pulled Lu Youting onto the balcony, answered the call, switched on the speakerphone, and before she could speak, Jian Shihai couldn’t wait to burst out.

“Jian Si, how could you air our family matters in public?

Where am I supposed to put my face?”

After five years without contact, the first call contained no comfort, no care, only reprimand and concern for face.

Jian Si glanced at Lu Youting with a mocking expression on her face.

Lu Youting stayed silent.

Jian Si asked emotionlessly, “Did you call just to scold me?

If so, I’m very busy and might not have time to listen to your scolding.”

Jian Shihai paused momentarily, apparently unable to believe that his normally obedient and submissive daughter would stand up to him.

“What kind of attitude is that?

I’ve raised you all these years, and I can’t even scold you once?”

Jian Si responded impatiently, “If you don’t get to the point soon, I’m hanging up.”

Fearing she would really hang up, Jian Shihai, even though angry, had to temporarily hold back, “We haven’t seen each other in five years, and now that you’re back, we, father and daughter, should get together.

Tomorrow at eleven noon, I’ll be waiting for you at home.”

His tone was assertive, with an air of intolerance to refusal.

Jian Si was also curious to see what changes might have occurred in her father after five years of absence and readily agreed, “Okay, I’ll be there on time.”

The call ended.

Jian Si looked towards Lu Youting and sneered, “Now do you think I’m just imagining him to be worse than he really is?”

Lu Youting was certain, “Misunderstandings between father and daughter can be sorted out through conversation, no need to be like enemies.

How Director Lu has treated you these past five years, I’ve seen it clearly.

He’s been looking for you the whole time.”

Jian Si laughed at his naivety.

She knew in her heart that her father was an utter hypocrite; otherwise, Ye Qingqing and Ye Weihao wouldn’t have kept their surname unaltered for so many years.

And since Lu Youting liked Ye Qingqing, he saw her through rose-colored glasses, in addition to Jian Shihai’s ability to disguise himself, so he never knew his true colors.

Jian Si couldn’t be bothered to explain and decisively said, “Since you think he’s that great, do you dare to accompany me to the Jian Family tomorrow?

I’ll let you see their true colors.”

“That is your family matter; it has nothing to do with me!” Lu Youting, unwilling to discuss further, walked away without looking back.

Her heart ached with anger, Jian Si took several deep breaths to calm her emotions before heading down to the kitchen, where she used the available ingredients to stew an abalone vermicelli soup for Lu Yanbai.

She placed the ingredients into the soup container, then turned the stove flame down to the lowest setting.

After tasting the soup to make sure it was fine, she left.

No sooner had she left,

A sneaky figure skulked in immediately afterward.

Seeing no one around, they clandestinely added a small bottle of transparent liquid to the soup and left as covertly as they had arrived.

At dinner time,

The family of three rarely sat together for the meal.

Lu Yanbai drank the soup Jian Si had made, his smile nearly reaching his ears, heaping praise on her, “Mommy, you’re so amazing; your cooking is really good, the soup is delicious!”

Watching him drink, Jian Si was filled with satisfaction, her heart brimming with happiness.

“Little brown-noser,” Lu Youting said with a dismissive glance, arrogantly lifting a spoonful of soup to his mouth.

A rich fragrance burst across his palate in an instant; the seafood had no fishy taste but retained the abalone’s fresh flavor, the texture silky and melting upon entering the mouth.

No wonder Xiao Bai always praised Jian Si’s cooking skills.

It wasn’t bootlicking; the skills were genuinely good.

Lu Youting slurped down two bowls in quick succession.

Just as he was about to start on the third, Jian Si shot him a deadly glare, “What, planning to finish it all?

I made this for Xiao Bai, why are you competing with him?”

“…?”

Lu Youting, still with a longing look, set down his bowl and watched as Xiao Bai kept drinking, unable to help swallowing his saliva.

Lu Yanbai had a small stomach and after two bowls was full, personally went to the kitchen to serve Jian Si a bowl, “Mommy, you drink too!”

Touched, Jian Si ruffled his little head and picked up the bowl to take a sip.

As soon as the soup entered her mouth, something felt off.

Thinking it was her imagination, she took another sip, still detecting a very faint sweet taste.

Although the sweet taste was almost completely masked by the seafood flavor, she recognized it immediately.

She swiftly returned to the kitchen and scooped a spoonful from the soup container.

The sweetness was still there.

What’s going on?

She clearly remembered not adding that kind of seasoning to the soup.
