Chapter 638: The Last Town
"There is one piece of information that is very valuable." Noah's voice grew serious as he stepped closer to Xin Yan. "We have to leave before it's too late."
The seriousness in his tone startled Xin Yan; she could not help but wonder what kind of information Noah obtained from the spy. While she was thinking, their bodies dematerialized in the air, returning the area to its old silence.
Disappearing from one city, Noah and Xin Yan appeared in front of another.
Without entering the place, his soul sense covered the whole place, and all of the secrets and the hidden passages in the city were laid bare before him.
"Are we late again?" Seeing the indifferent look on Noah's face, Xin Yan asked even when she knew the answer herself.
"They had been preparing for a long time, and it is no surprise that they have already achieved their target in some places." Noah replied with a sigh.
"The pattern is very similar. All the perpetrators are dead here." He clicked his tongue. "I have already moved the bodies from the array. We should go to the next city."
"How many such places are there?" she asked.
Noah paused, his eyes darting towards the city gates in the distance as a single word left his mouth. "Nine."
With a flash, they disappeared once more, only to be shocked to see the sight before their eyes.
Most parts of the city were in ruins, razed to the ground by a beast tide.
He repeated the process as he did with the previous city and moved to the next one. All the beasts had already left a long time ago, and only the aftermath of the destruction was left.
One by one, he covered seven cities aside from the city he met Ah Shi in.
But in none of these cities did he find a single survivor. Despite this, Noah did not lose any hope and moved on to the next city.
Woosh!
"These cities are all surrounding the great desolate forest." Xin Yan frowned, seeing the familiar surroundings of trees without any leaves.
"I noticed that as well, but this forest is a distraction. Even if these cities have circles around the forest, the source of the array's strength and the place where souls are going are two different places."
Noah commented, his soul sense already working through the last city. Seeing the pristine state of this city, he held a bit of hope.
"I bet the array inside the desolate forest is but a mere power source for the entire thing. Even if we turn it off, it won't do any good but alarm the perpetrators."
Seeing him suddenly stop, Xin Yan turned to look at him. She saw a gleam of relief in his eyes and breathed a sigh of relief.
"Ten bodies placed under a restaurant that I am sure was opened in the past year." Noah muttered under his breath.
"The place looks quite popular." Xin Yan had already targeted the place with her own soul sense.
"It's the pattern they were ordered to follow. Popular healer, fortune-telling old man, and a kind singer.
They were all told to gain the trust of the public and also become so popular that even the magistrate cannot ignore their presence."
When he stopped, Xin Yan continued, adding her own evaluation. "Just like a restaurant that serves a dish that the daughter of the magistrate happens to like."
"You said that there were ten bodies as of now." Xin Yan saw Noah walking towards the city and followed him. "So that means there will be two more kidnappings."
"The Demonic Guardian Array needs 109 mortal soul sacrifices to be complete. Other than the first town, every single one had 12 sacrifices. This one should be the same." After seeing the third village, Noah had already realized what kind of array formation they were dealing with.
In his memories there were several million formations of all ranks and types. Some modification or alteration of a single formation, so pointing out the precise formation took some time and clues to verify.
But even if he knew about the formation, he did not know the endgame of the mastermind behind all of this.
Clank!
With a single step, the two of them moved past the guards at the entrance without them even realizing and appeared directly in front of the restaurant.
While at the same time, in the main hall of the magistrate's mansion.
A man who appeared to be in his late twenties was sitting on the ground with a table full of documents and books before him.
He held a small scroll in his hand that informed him that his daughter had once again left to visit the infamous restaurant to try their special sausage and dumplings.
He had no idea how many times he had read this information in the past eleven months.
Just when he was about to throw the information away after shaking his head with a wry smile on his face, something unexpected happened.
If you want to save your daughter, come to the Night Sky restaurant as soon as possible. A voice directly spoke in his head, freezing him on the spot.
Despite being young, he was a magistrate for a reason. He quickly regained his composure and rushed to the door.
His mind was already running at a fast pace. Someone who could even send him a message in such a way could only be a legendary immortal!
And in front of such experts, no matter how many soldiers he brought, it would make no difference.
"Everyone stays on their post; I will be going out for a while." So he promptly made the decision to not endanger unnecessary lives and rushed to the informed place all by himself.
When he appeared before the Night Sky restaurant, a decent-looking building with a delicious scent coming from inside, drawing several customers inside, he saw a couple whose appearance he could only describe as divine standing before the restaurant, seemingly waiting for someone.
Seeing that no one else reacted to their presence or even acted like they existed, he guessed that they were the reason he was here.
What do you think?
