Volume 14 Chapter 30: Keep Running!
Jack and Coen's group were facing off against one another, "Keep going! Do not let up on them!" They were facing a trio of bears. Jack and the rest continued to circle around the beasts. Their heads swiveled left and right. However, it was impossible; when they swiveled to look at one person, there was one behind it!
Swoosh! With its attention on someone, an arrow came from the opposite side! It struck dead in the eye.
"Now!" That was when they all charged into the bears, piercing all of them. The bears slowly became motionless.
“Good work, everyone.” These past few days, they had been fighting monsters rinse and repeat. There was a downside with such a large group; with more people, they would need to split the loot seven ways. Hunting for more beasts was a must.
While they rested, “Jack, you’re incredible.”
"Hmm?" The man glanced up as he stopped wiping his blade, “I’m really not that great when you compare me to Keith or Krystal.” Again, those two were monsters. They could finish these bears in five minutes tops on a bad day.
“But those two are outliers.” It was difficult to compare anyone to them.
"I learn how to react from the exploration."
Jack was the winger in Keith's party. Being in that position, he had to react faster than the others. He was a sub-tank/attack for the group, a versatile frontline who helped supplement the others in an emergency.
Coen smiled, "Jack, you should have been the leader." Before Jack nominated him, he would have named the other.
“Some people are best adapted to be a leader. That’s not me; I can only look at it through a narrow lens.” The leader was the one who called the shots from a grander perspective. They had to predict the outcome even before it happened. Moreover, they needed to alter on the fly as well.
He wasn't someone who could do that. Gabriel and Faelyn were capable of doing this, but that was not him.
"I'll give you my two senses, but that's the best I could do." That was what he did now; he made minor adjustments while Coen cared for the bigger picture.
"What's our next move?" Everyone turned to Coen.
"We'll continue to hunt monsters using this formation. I want to have five times the amount we have now."
"Why?" Helm tilted his head. Five times the amount was a tall order.
"We may have different criteria for each student on how they will pass." The class, in general, was split skewly in abilities. There was too much disparity when you compare Keith, the strongest, to the weakest in the class.
"If we want solid grades for the final, each student might need a different amount depending on our class or another criteria they have." Jack might be given a higher benchmark on passing compared to Helm.
“I see.” The beastman nodded when he heard, “I heard some beast roaming around from the side. Maybe we can go there and get some of the stones.” His job was to search for monsters for them to hunt.
"That's good." Coen nodded, "Then we'll head there once we rest up." Their horses needed a break from fighting for so long.
Over at Keith's side, the man was relaxed, yet a scowl slowly formed. What's going on? A faint smell of blood waffled the air.
Despite going the opposite way of where the monsters were going, he still felt an off-ness.
Numerous prints were on the ground.
What's going on? Keith analyzed the footprints. There was no way they came back all around, right?
Whatever it was, it was big and large. I hope the others are alright? Keith would be able to handle it. But the rest, he didn't know about.
Krystal had the same mindset as she rode her horse, and she had noticed many markings on the ground. But instead of pulling a Keith and trying to walk away, she chose to follow after it. If she could defeat them, she would get some points.
While she continued forward with her plans, she heard shouting.
“Keep running!” “Don't you dare let up!”
“Jack?” Krystal stared at the boy who was fleeing with all his might, and he was not alone either, as a couple of people were behind him as well. He couldn't help but be glad and worry about the situation that was unfolding, “Krystal, run for your life!”
“!” The woman didn't hesitate to quickly turn around and dashed the same way as them. The horses were going at breakneck speed to get away from all of this. She couldn't help but ask, “What is going on?! Why is there such a monster chasing after you?” What kind of hive did he poke to get such a trigger?
“Don't even ask us!” Jack wanted to cry as he couldn't believe it as well. They were running away with all their might. But behind them was something that was demolishing anything that came their way. Krystal frowned, “I doubt we'll be able to outrun them.”
“I know, but there’s something that I need to do.”
“What do you plan to do in this situation?” There was no way they would be able to defeat something like that. But that was too much as well. It was going to be getting strenuous.
What do you think?
