Chapter 577: Escorts to the after life.
The slap in itself was startling but the ghost actually admitting that it felt the slap was what actually froze the hunters in the room. Phoebe too was shocked as much; she had expected ethereal mist. Instead, her hand met cold clammy flesh.
"Oh my God! That can happen?" Maureen studied Obed's cheek, curiosity at its peak she did the same thing Phoebe had done, only for her hand to pass through as if she was slapping the wind.
Rekha let out a loud chuckle. "Yeah well, not all of us can be the grand guardian." Her words were loud, and they were an accident. She covered her mouth as soon as she realized what she had blurted out.
Her wide frightened eyes turned to Phoebe as she slapped her mouth lightly, "Sorry...sorry....It was the slip of a tongue."
Maureen meanwhile pulled out talismans to ensure that if memory wiping was a requirement, it could be done. But on looking around, everyone in the office with them could be trusted, as long as they did not blurt out the secret like Rekha had just done.
"What do we do?" Maureen whispered to Phoebe, pointing at Obed who was too flustered to move.
For a beat, Obed did not know how to react. Then came the delayed blink, heavy with shock. It was Maureen's pointing that woke him up. "She is the grand guardian! Holy shit I cannot believe that I am lucky enough to meet a grand guardian in my lifetime. You are a legend!! This is like meeting a dinosaur.
It makes sense now that she can touch ghosts. According to those books at the academy, the grand guardian can touch every supernatural creature and even erase them from existence at the snap of a finger. Wow!! how the hell did the Mayfair's give birth to a grand guardian? It makes no sense." He pointed an index finger at Phoebe.
"Shut up Obed before some ghost hears you and carries the news into dangerous ears." Phoebe warned, her hand shot out, smacking his finger aside like some bothersome fly.
Obed however didn't hear a word as he started laughing__his laughter too loud and too hungry, the roar of a beast that had just cornered its prey. "This is just great! Because it means that she can save my soul." He skipped weightlessly.
"Does anyone remember the women that are about to be buried?" The Saxon shouted, seeking attention.
That reminder sprung them into movement, but Maureen still warned Obed as they left the cafe. "I will erase you before you can spill a word of this. So, if you know what is good for you, keep your mouth shut and stick to saving your soul and moving on. "
Obed hardly heard Maureen, he was giggling with each buoyant step as he floated through the walls and into the car.
He did not stop bothering Phoebe through the car ride, bombarding her with never ending questions.
"So, can you feel all the magic in the universe?"
"No."
"Can you make this car fly?"
"No."
"Can you see demons even when they are hiding behind human skins?"
"No."
"Can you..."
"Shut up Obed." Maureen screamed.
Phoebe cocked her head tired of the silly questions, she was aware that helping him could get him to move on faster, but she did not know how she was going to help him. How was she going to save his soul. How was it related to the girls that were going to be buried with him?
Why were they buried with him in the first place? What kind of custom was this? Did it mean every Montgomery that died was not buried alone? Goosebumps crept up her hand as she thought about what her wild guess signified.
Phoebe flipped her coins and ordered the undead pets to head out ahead of them and find anything suspicious at the Montgomery house.
"Undead pets. cool!!" Obed gushed, almost running vanishing after the cat and raven like a child running after a ball and a dog in a park.
Phoebe meanwhile was on another fact-finding mission. Why could see touch ghosts now? The question was addressed to the Saxon spirit.
The spirit let out a long but heavy sigh. "It is not you, its Star's abilities that are growing and you can access them because she is still in your womb. The more extraordinary she becomes, the more difficult it will be to keep this little secret about you being the grand guardian. Sooner or later, someone will connect the dots." It communicated quietly.
"I understand. Is there more you can tell me about her extraordinary abilities. What else will she be able to do when her abilities reach full potential? Are there specific powers at specific weeks or months?" Phoebe asked.
Shaking its head, curiosity crossed the spirit's eyes. "I have never known a grand guardian that came into her power as a child. The gift is manifested in adulthood; Star's case is one of a kind.
Every guardian has power over the four classic elements that is water, fire, earth and air. They also control the spirit, light, shadows and the void. You can imagine what kind of things that she will be able to do. For a young grand guardian, we just have to wait and see." It replied smoothly. "I know you have more questions, but we should discuss this case now."
There was quite a distance from the Cerene apartments to the Montgomery manor. The Saxon spirit was correct, during that time it was best for Phoebe to ask Obed for more information about the girls and the burial ritual. "Do not leave anything out." Her tone was commanding.
Obed, who was glad to talk to the grand guardian was very willing to open up. In fact, he was eager to do. "It's a custom that I consider to be evil, those coffins are not made big for nothing. Two women that are still alive, but unconscious are placed in those coffins beside a dead Montgomery.
One on the left and one on the right. I thought it was a myth until I died, and I saw two women being chosen to escort me to the afterlife. I recognized them, they work for my family. Apparently, they have been fattening them up for this day.
As it turns out, there are women raised by the Montgomery's for this exact reason. All that charity they do is not without reason. It is insane! I do not understand why they do that, but I don't want it for myself. It is murder, I could go to hell for this even though I am not a willing participant." A frown carved deep into his face__less anger than grief for the path his family had chosen.
He was not shocked to see the horrified looks on the faces of the listeners.
"Fuck me!" Maureen muttered.
Old lady Mayfair gasped. Between what the Montgomery's were doing and Maureen's vulgar cursing, she did not know which to address first.
"Ha! My goodness. Thank God that your family chased me away because what in the crazy is that! Just wait and see, I will blast this out to the world." Rekha's voice was sharp but filled with gratitude.
Obed let out a scoff. "Believe me that when I found out, I wanted to run away but I was already dying....." he folded his lips and said nothing else.
"Zephyra, have you heard of anything like this?" Phoebe asked curiously. The Montgomery manor was already in sight; the hour of truth was arriving. She wanted to be armed appropriately before going forward.
What do you think?
