Chapter 378 - 378- God’s Gate (Part 16)

Arthur felt his face break a sweat at the sight of this ungodly abyss he just witnessed. Nothing about it felt normal, not even its darkness. He could swear he heard wails and cries coming from deep within this endless fall.

But that was not even the worst part about it. What truly terrified him was how seamless it was in the way it blended with the environment around it. The hole was completely camouflaged by the darkness, making it almost impossible to see before it was too late. The only reason Arthur stopped was the fact he heard the sand falling through the hole and it made him freeze.

If he didn't hear that then he was going to fall into it without noticing. Almost like an overly large booby trap.

"Man… I almost fell there." Gulping down a mouthful of saliva as he laughed nervously. "Damn it… Why the needless jumpscare, you bastards? How is this hole even that camouflaged? It shouldn't be possible."

"Sir, are you ok?" Germa approached the boy quickly.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Arthur stood up and dusted his clothes. "I almost fell into the hole. That was close."

"The hole? Wait, the hole is up ahead, sir?"

"Yeah, it's over there." Arthur pointed. "That thing is well-hidden."

"..."

"Germa?"

"It's… It's nothing, sir. I have heard that the hole is quite hidden, but I couldn't tell you in time. I'm deeply sorry."

"It's fine. Even if you told me, I wouldn't have known where it was until I got close enough." Arthur shook his head. Whether he knew it existed or not, feeling its location was near impossible.

"So, what are we supposed to do now? How can we cross this hole into this island or whatever?" He asked.

"There are… chains that link the island to the rest of The Void. We must find one of these chains and cross through it." Germa replied.

"How big are these chains?"

"Big enough for all of us to pass through, sir. The trip to the island might take some time, so we need to hurry."

"Yeah. Tell everyone to get prepared. We will be moving next to the hole till I see one of the chains." He said. "And tell them not to move anywhere near the hole. I will be the one walking closest to it and you lot will be to my right side." He said.

'Only I can somehow figure out where the edge of the abyss is. I can't let anyone get close.'

With that, the group carefully gathered around Arthur, where he positioned them accordingly. He made sure that the group was formed into a long line that stretched quite far forward. He didn't want anyone walking behind him or beside him to make sure he had a vision of anyone getting close to the edge.

After making sure the formation was perfect, he ordered them to start moving, and with that, the group started marching along the large hole, looking for the chain Germa was talking about.

The darkness of the world and the large abyss a few steps away from them were quite nerve-wracking, to say the least.

Arthur was particularly very tense as his eyes kept looking to the side, making sure he didn't take a wrong step and throw himself into the unknown. He didn't even want to know what could happen if something like that happened.

'I'm certain it will be a point of no return. This world is already as close from that as it can be, so I don't even want to think about what a dark hole in this hell would lead to.' He sighed.

Several minutes passed quietly as the march continued. During which, Arthur was able to keep an eye on his surroundings rather well. However, he couldn't find any trace of any chains Germa was talking about.

"Germa, where are these chains? Aren't we supposed to find at least one by now?" Arthur asked.

"We should be close to one by now, sir."

"Hmm, weird. If they're as large as you said, I should be seeing them from he-"

Before Arthur could even finish the sentence, he heard a large noise penetrate his ears out of nowhere. Everyone instantly stopped.

*EEEEEEE*

The noise was deep and strong, reverbrating through the air. It was also incredibly slow, akin to the growl of an ancient monster.

"What the hell?" Arthur frowned deeply. "Is that the sound of a monster?"

However, for some reason, when he listened to it again, he realized that it wasn't really a monster. Rather, the noise was almost like the moaning of metal as it scraped against something.

"That noise…" Germa muttered under his breath.

"Germa?"

"That's the sound of one of the chains, sir! We are close!"

"..."

'That's the noise made by a chain?! How large is this thing?!' Arthur shuddered. The noise he had just heard was extremely loud, something he would hear from a large explosion or something of that caliber.

Yet, this was only the sound of the chain swaying left and right. It was simply an absurd idea to think about, and it gave Arthur a strong realization that he might've just underestimated this place way more than he should've.

"Let's hurry." He said.

With that, the group hurried their steps, their focus completely directed toward the noise, attracted to it like moths to a flame.

"We're almost there. The sound had grown louder." Arthur muttered as he stared into the darkness.

Through the blinding darkness, an immensely large silhouette started shaping in the distance, immediately taking Arthur's attention completely. His eyes slowly widened as the true scale of this structure started taking shape in his eyes.

The closer he got, the larger it got, and the more shocked he was. His neck slowly cranked up, trying to see the peak of this structure.

"What in God's…" Arthur muttered with a gasp. The chain Germa was talking about wasn't simply large… What Arthur was seeing at that moment was a behemoth of a structure, reaching into the sky like a piercing pillar.

It was a chain of ridiculous proportions.
