I Became My Healer Elf Character

Chapter 113: Deadly Arena

Hikari watched Syndra standing across from the pretty boy as she placed her bet. Several people in the crowd had already started murmuring about how strong this guy supposedly was, but Hikari could tell he was not all that. Even without an inspection, she knew. Besides, she felt like checking his status would have been cheating somehow.

One of the attendants stepped down into the arena and acted as a referee. "The rules are simple. If anyone gets incapacitated or knocked out of this square, they will lose. Try to avoid killing each other if you can."

Syndra nodded and readied two of her daggers. "Let's just get this over with. I've been dying to try these out."

Regulus frowned and unsheathed his sparkling sword. The golden hilt glistened in the sunlight. "As soon as this fight is over, I'll be having the time of my life with that elf."

Kurayami clutched her fist. "Master, can I kill that man when this battle is over?"

Hikari chuckled and patted the dragon's head. "There's no need to go that far. It's like you said before. The guy is an ant. Do we really need to worry about ants?"

Regulus heard the elf from a distance and clenched his teeth.

Well, it wasn't like I was trying to make my voice silent anyway. The elf stuck her tongue out towards him and made a silly face. She felt that his true demise would not be losing the match. No, his reputation was on the line, so Hikari intended to press the wound if she could.

The referee nodded at both participants. "As soon as this coin hits the ground, you two can start."

With that, the man flipped a ceremonial coin into the air and leapt away from the two outside of their box.

Hikari watched the coin falling. The motion was incredibly slow, and the crowd grew completely silent, but the instant it hit the ground, the battle started.

Regulus prepared his sword and dashed forward. A faint glow covered it, and soon the whole thing was covered in an aura of ice.

The elf had expected someone of his demeanor to use fire, and it seemed the same was true for the cat.

Syndra's eyes widened, but she met his charge with both of her daggers. She charged her own mana into them, using a martial skill.

In the game, martial skills were much better when silent cast. It was easier to throw your opponent off guard, and all of the martial classes came with silent casting skills. Alternatively, it was rare for spell casters to gain the ability. Everything in the game was based off of dungeons conquered and skills gained from specific quests or clears.

This made it so that every class and even every person within those classes were unique. No two people could truly have the exact same build, yet martial classes always had silent casting that were based on only training.

Either way, the martial skill this time acted as a brace. The two daggers were covered in a dark hue, and when the sword slid against them, it was easily deflected with their hilt.

Regulus clearly didn't expect his attack to be deflected. His surprise ruined his posture, and he was thrown off balance. One of his legs was still in the air. However, he was clearly used to combat.

Instead of trying to fix himself haphazardly, he channeled mana into that leg. A shield of ice covered his leg, and he used it to kick towards the beastkin's side.

Syndra was already prepared for the attack. The moment her opponent's sword was deflected, she dropped low to the ground. The leg whipped right over her head, and she used her own leg to kick towards the pretty boy's only leg on the ground.

Her strike rang true, and his leg was swept from under him. Regulus grunted in surprise and landed hard on his back.

Before he could even do anything, the tip of an assassin's dagger was pointed at his throat.

"Well," Syndra said, "it looks like you don't have a leg to stand on. Pun intended."

Regulus crunched his teeth together and shook his head. "You heard the man…"

Hikari knew what he was getting at. The referee said incapacitation or ring out. Technically, Regulus was still awake. Though, it annoyed Hikari to see the man and to admit he was right by technicality.

Syndra didn't seem to know what he was getting at, and Regulus took advantage of that.

He grabbed her arm tight, and pulled the dagger away from his throat. "You might be quick, but what about your strength?"

Regulus grinned and grabbed her arm even tighter.

From a distance, Hikari could see that his tight grip made a red mark along the cat's arm.

"Master, I really hate this man! Please, let me kill this dishonorable ant!"

Though, the cat kin merely smiled. "Incapacitation? Isn't death also a form of incapacitation?"

Regulus widened his eyes in confusion, but the answer was quick. The cat's second dagger lunged towards the other side of his throat.

The man panicked, but he somehow managed to catch the second one. He grabbed her wrists as tight as he could, until there was a snapping sound, and then he threw the girl over him.

He jumped to his feet and stared at the girl who dropped her daggers. The twin blades crashed to the floor, and her arms hung limply. "Now you have no way to attack me, beast."

Regulus must have expected the girl to grow panicked, but what greeted him instead was a devilish smile. The cat girl's slit pupils narrowed, and she became fully alert, her ears perked towards the sky.

"Oh no," Hikari said with a helpless smile, "this girl is a battle maniac."

"My arms aren't the only weapons I have," Syndra said. "[Assassin's Gale]"

Gale force winds seemed to propel the cat forward. She moved so fast that many of the crowd had lost her. The only thing they could see was a black shadow where the cat used to be.

Regulus looked around with his eyes in confusion, but he was far too slow.

The cat girl was already beside him, and the tip of her foot was angled towards his head. A sharp dagger sprouted from the sole of her assassin's boots. The impact was instant, and the effect was immediate.

Regulus' neck was pierced cleanly through by the hidden weapon. His eyes were filled with surprise as the blood ran down his throat.

He fell to the floor, and his death set in rapidly. He tried to slow the bleeding with ice, using his magic to coat his neck in a thin layer, but the damage had already been done. Gurgles welled up in his throat as he choked on his own blood.

Meanwhile, Syndra used an assassin's technique to get the blood flowing back into her wrists, and her constitution made them snap together.

Hikari could only watch the dying man. She felt nothing in her heart for him. While it was true that killing him might be considered going too far, he asked for it. Moreover, there were no rules in this world that prevented death from an arena fight. What Syndra said about incapacitation was also true.

The referee looked in horror at the winner of the duel. He sheepishly announced her victory to the crowd. "By way of death, this girl is the winner…"

Though, the response of the some of the crowd were cheers.

"Serves him right!"

Kurayami nodded and crossed her arms. "Master, this is the fate of those without honor. This man had clearly crossed the line and got what he deserved. I like this cat girl already."

Hikari once again could only cast a wry smile. She joined her dragon in waiting outside of the arena, but it didn't take long for the cat girl to join them.

"How do you feel?" Hikari asked.

"It's surprising. I never expected to take a life, but I don't feel anything about it. Rather, a larger part of my mind is proud of what I did. When I was in that zone, the only thing I could think of was making him pay somehow. When he broke my wrists, something else inside of my head snapped."

Hikari nodded. "Let me see."

The elf girl grabbed onto both of Syndra's wrists and checked on their condition. While the assassin was healing slowly, there were still some cracks in the bone that Hikari quickly mended.

Syndra sighed in relief. "Thank you. That's much better. Is it really okay to leave that guy like this?"

"Yes, the guards will come and pick him up. Dying in an arena is considered an honorable death, so even if he was despicable as a person, I imagine his family will be glad he got a warrior's end. Besides, if he didn't die, I'm not entirely sure if I could have stopped Kurayami from doing the deed herself."

The dragon in question looked away as if her master's words had nothing to do with her.
