Book 6: Chapter 12: Trust and Answer
“You’ll pay for this!” Three gathered her divine power once more, looking ready to perish alongside the golden swords surrounding her.
While she held back the pure white hand and the relentless rain of golden swords, the small, red snake that had escaped earlier slithered away from the battlefield and darted into the piles of jagged rocks scattered across the island.
At the edge of the island, Erica and Lilith stood together. Nearby, Greenie’s massive head lay in the shallow water. Her eyes were tightly shut, and she looked like she was dying.
“Lilith, what do we do with her?” Erica asked anxiously, her gaze fixed on Greenie, whose labored breathing made the urgency clear.
At that moment, Erica wished more than anything that the body she now inhabited was her own. If it were, she could have used the healing magic she had mastered.
Instead, she could only stand there, helpless and frustrated.
Deep down, Erica knew the truth. With her level of power, healing those below the Saint Realm was no problem. But for a serpentine monster whose physical size and realm far surpassed her abilities, she was powerless.
She hated how powerless she was.
“Use the healing scrolls,” Lilith said through gritted teeth.
“Huh? But what will you do without the scroll?”“It doesn’t matter. Saving a life is more important.”
“Alright.”
Erica obediently activated the healing scrolls, one after another, directing their restorative magic toward Greenie.
Unable to do anything without her hands, Lilith sat in front of Greenie’s massive head, quietly rooting for the creature.
“Come on now, you can’t die.” She pressed her forehead against the icy-cold scales beneath Greenie’s eyes, as if willing her prayers to reach the creature’s heart.
“Hang in there, big gal. You still have to tell me your name. And… why do I feel like I know you? For some reason, I don’t hate you, even though you look so ugly… I have so many questions for you, so… please, you must survive,” she murmured under her breath.
A low, rumbling gasp broke the silence.
The ground shook beneath Lilith’s feet.
She looked up, only to see Greenie gazing at her with wide eyes filled with boundless fondness.
With great effort, the creature slowly raised her enormous head. She gently tapped Lilith’s forehead with the tip of her lips—the softest part of her entire body. It felt almost like a peck.
Overcome with joy, Lilith wrapped her arms around as much of Greenie as she could, exclaiming, “Are you alright, Big Gal?!”
Greenie didn’t respond.
Erica, still working on activating the healing scrolls, suddenly jumped to her feet, her expression alarmed.
“No, something’s not right! She shouldn’t be able to move at all after being this gravely injured. Her strength should be completely drained!”
Lilith turned her head stiffly, asking, “What?”
“She shouldn’t be moving at all right now! The fact she can move now means she’s experiencing terminal lucidity!” Erica cried, on the verge of tears.
“Termi…nal… lucid…ity..?” Lilith’s eyes widened in bewilderment.
She looked up at Greenie, her voice cracking as she asked, “That’s not true, right? Tell me this isn’t true, Big Gal! Erica must be lying to me, right?!”
Greenie didn’t answer. Instead, she gently rubbed her head against Lilith’s. A fleeting resolve filled her distant eyes as she slowly turned away and began swimming toward the depths of the lake.
Lilith reached out weakly, as if to stop her…
But the words wouldn’t come. Deep down, she already understood why Greenie was leaving. She could do nothing but watch, helpless, as the creature gradually disappeared from her sight.
“What a touching scene.”
Lilith spun around. A small blood-red snake poked its head out from a crack in the stone, speaking in a voice unmistakably belonging to Three.
“I thought you were heartless and didn’t expect you’d grieve for the passing of others.”
“That’s my line… You wipe out lives so casually—do you even have a heart?” Lilith’s face twisted in fury.
“Me?” The blood-red snake froze for a moment, before letting out a dry chuckle. “I’ll admit, I’m a bit heartless. But, Your Highness… even now, you don’t truly understand the existence inside your body, do you? Do you have any idea how terrifying it really is?”
“The… existence inside me?”
The Dragon Eater?
Lilith knew exactly how terrifying Dragon Eater was. She had wielded a fraction of that entity’s power and understood that it was a power that could disregard realms. The fact that the Dragon Eater could reduce even the seemingly invincible Cornelia to her current form spoke volumes about her terrifying power.
“But…”
Lilith’s gaze hardened as she looked at the blood-red snake, her voice steady and resolute. “That doesn’t give you the right to possess other people’s bodies and destroy their lives!”
“Hahahahahaha… no right, you say?”
The little red snake, which was Three, burst into laughter, as if she had just heard the funniest joke in the world.
“How naive, Your Highness. Let me ask you: if I hadn’t possessed this girl’s body or killed that strange serpent just now, would you have willingly come with me and revealed the existence of the entity inside you to the Great World?”
Lilith thought for a moment, then replied, “I wouldn’t, because I don’t trust you. I don’t believe what you’re doing is right. What if you’re just trying to usurp her power? What if you have another ulterior motive?”
“Exactly. You don’t trust me.”
Three sneered, as though she had anticipated the answer.
“But in the same way, I—or rather, we—don’t trust you either. What if that entity inside you really is as dangerous as we fear? What if you’ve already been influenced by her? Or worse, what if you’ve been completely taken over? That kind of terror is beyond words. And no matter what, we will never allow that kind of existence to descend into the world.”
“You’re… that afraid of her?”
Three let out a dry chuckle. “Your naivety is charming, Princess.”
Three’s snake body trembled involuntarily, as if recalling some distant nightmare.
“It’s not just fear. It’s a terror that comes from experience. The Great World once teetered on the brink of ruin because of her. Billions of lives were lost and countless families were torn apart. That devastation left deep-seated terror in the souls of all who survived….”
Lilith opened her mouth, but no words came out. Even now, she struggled to believe Three. Everything she said felt too unrealistic. If Dragon Eater was truly as terrifying as Three described, then why was she trapped within her body in the first place?
From the way she spoke, it was clear that she had been trapped for countless years… so long that she had even forgotten the taste of tea.
Three was right about one thing: it was impossible for them to understand each other. Neither side trusted the other, so they could only fight until the bitter end.
Three suddenly raised her slender neck and said, “In any case, I’m now sure that you do have that entity inside you.”
“You were setting me up?!” Lilith exclaimed, realization dawning.
“My dear princess, time is running out, and I’m weary of killing. I have no desire to kill you, but that new demigod that’s suddenly emerged is making me uncomfortable. So, may I ask for a small favor?”
The little red snake’s eyes bored into Lilith’s before continuing, “Show me a glimpse of that power. Just a slight demonstration will do.”
“I refuse,” Lilith replied without hesitation.
