Chapter 589: Ozra
Anerias had pushed the Darkwing hard. It didn't take long for them to arrive at the Academy, though they waited outside it. It also didn't take long for them to figure out that something had gone wrong since Zach wasn't there, and it didn't feel like he was coming anytime soon.
With the confidence he had and with what they knew about teleportation, Zach should have won the race unless something had happened.
Anerias dropped off Nessa and returned to the Palace. As expected, Zach was still there. Instead of teleporting anywhere, he was chatting up the princess.
Anerias rolled his eyes. He didn't even bother questioning Zach about what had happened on the way to the Academy.
When they arrived, Nessa had already started talking to the Academy. She had gotten roped into to teaching one of the younger classes about summoning. She seemed ot be enjoying herself, so Zach and Anerias just waved before continuing inside the Academy in search of the principal.
Nessa didn't mind. She would much rather teach the students, who were so much smaller than her when she was their age.
Zach knocked on three doors before being guided to the principal's office. There, he found instructor Kami but no principal.
"Zach…?" Kami tilted his head in surprise as he hurriedly closed the drawer in the principal's desk.
"You're still alive?" However, his surprise was not limited to Zach's appearance at the Academy.
"Why wouldn't I be…?" Zach asked suspiciously. Was Kami hoping he was dead?
"I heard…I mean, no reason. You're just reckless." Kami shrugged nonchalantly and tried to move away from that topic. Zach saw right through him.
"Because of Ozra…?" He asked, surprising Kami again.
"You met her?"
"Something like that."
"And she didn't try to kill you?"
"She did."
Kami frowned in confusion as if he could not understand how both of those could be true, and Zach was still alive.
"How did you survive?"
"Charm, good looks, wit, and just by being the best."
"..." Kami shot him a blank look.
Anerias cringed and looked away.
"It's a decently long story that I can't be bothered repeating again. Who is she?"
"That…You might be better off asking the principal that."
"But he's not here, is he?"
With how the principal acted, he would have already thrown himself at Zach to try and get him to stay if he were at the Academy.
Zach couldn't remember a time when the principal left the Academy other than when he accompanied them to the capital following their graduation.
"No. Something came up, and I don't know when he'll be back. You're welcome to stay and help out."
"In your dreams, especially if you don't tell me anything about Ozra. But if you do tell me…" Zach's voice trailed off as he hinted to Kami that he might help out if Kami helped him.
Kami sighed.
"She was…The first S-rank student to attend the Academy and the greatest summoner. I don't know about the principal, but I think she might be on the same level as you or perhaps a sliver behind, purely in terms of ranks of familiars."
Zach's eyes widened.
He had broken the limit of the human body and acquired a vessel strong enough to summon the strongest possible sequence of familiars. He had done that thanks to the world essence energy flowing through his veins.
Ozra didn't have any world essence energy. She hadn't needed to use any energy during their fight, but Zach would have felt it if she had world essence energy. Maybe she had another energy of a similar level.
"Yeah, you made waves during your time here, Zach. But before you, there was me, and before me, there was Ozra. There was no one before her unless you count the principal. She was unprecedented.
"It would have been fine if she was…a kinder person. But she didn't have the best childhood. The day she first came to the Academy, she stood on the doorstep in rags with a broken nose and bloodied knuckles. Her appearance wasn't much different the last time she set foot here.
"But she had gone from fighting back-alley thugs to the principal."
"She fought the principal?!" Zach was shocked.
He had grown a lot since he first set foot on the path of summoning. As long as he was in a good state, he was confident he could fight most people in the Academy. He was even starting to think about how far away Sio was.
He could not even dream of picking a fight with the principal.
"I mean, it was a total failure. She didn't even touch the hem of the principal's clothes, but still…"
"Yeah, it takes a special kind to challenge the principal."
"Mhm. Since she isn't afraid of the principal, there's not a lot in this world holding her back."
"Is that why everyone who knows about her is scared of her?"
"Part of it, yeah." Kami sighed again.
"Much like you, Zach, she has a tendency to find herself in messes. But it wasn't just that she found herself in them. She went looking for them.
"In a way, she had been blessed since birth with innate strength. And she was a dangerously talented summoner. But to those who didn't know about that, she was just an ordinary, attractive girl.
"More than one or two tried to pursue her. Some had yet to be taught the meaning of 'No.' So, Ozra taught them a lesson the people around them wouldn't soon forget. Her students, though? All dead."
"It sounds like they deserved it, though."
"I won't argue with you. But I think there are better solutions than going on a murderous rampage across the Empire in your free time."
"Is that why people are scared of her?"
"She's a crazy strong, cold-blooded killer. Is that not enough to fear her?" Kami shot back.
Zach narrowed his eyes.
"You talked as if you had seen her with your own eyes, but you haven't, have you? You haven't met Ozra."
"..." Kami's silence was confirmation.
"She's not cold-blooded," Zach said simply.
She might be crazy strong and even a little crazy, but who wasn't a little crazy in their business?
But she was no cold-blooded killer.
What do you think?
